Job description: Job Description:

Weather Editor, San Francisco Chronicle

The San Francisco Chronicle has an opening for an ambitious, resourceful and discerning weather editor to join the newsroom. The editor will supervise a start-up team that will focus on providing readers with daily forecasts, data-driven stories, evergreen explainers and utility projects to better inform residents across the Bay Area, Northern California and beyond.

The successful candidate will have experience working on weather and climate coverage.

We are looking for a whip-sharp, positive communicator who enjoys working with fellow journalists, developing editorial strategy, making creative decisions about how stories should be presented, and partnering with audience, producer, data, design, photo and other teams to make stories captivate readers and resonate online.

The editor should embrace a collaborative environment and appreciate the opportunity to develop talent in the newsroom. The successful candidate should possess the drive to deliver best-in-class coverage for a local audience, often on tight deadlines, as well as the curiosity to ask what worthy stories remain untold and what tools could improve our readers’ lives. Strict devotion to accuracy, fairness and inclusiveness in coverage is a must.

The editor will work with a close-knit team that writes stories, develops products and builds projects from the ground up, in service to a rapidly growing local audience of readers and subscribers who appreciate high-quality news and analysis. The team will produce daily forecasts for the Bay Area’s varied microclimates, write enterprise stories on weather trends that affect our communities and add scientific depth to our reporting. The editor will likely have a hand in selecting their team members and will help set the strategy for the group’s overall direction.

What the weather editor will do:

● Supervise, edit and professionally develop a small team of journalists, with a focus on providing best-in-class weather stories and utilities for a local audience.

● Create a program of useful daily forecasts for the Bay Area and beyond. ● Oversee a daily newsletter featuring forecasts, stories and other useful information. ● Work collaboratively with journalists across the newsroom, including pitching ideas for interactive presentations.

● Coordinate the long-term planning of in-depth stories and tools, managing timelines and workflows.

● Ensure that coverage reflects the diversity of experiences and needs in the Bay Area. What it will take to be successful:

● At least four years experience at a daily newspaper, magazine, web publication or the equivalent.

● A demonstrated history of writing and editing weather content.

● Strong news judgment, creativity and meticulousness.

● Understanding of modern forecasting techniques.

● Ability to edit stories to make them more clear and compelling.

● Knowledge of multimedia storytelling, social media engagement and other strategies to broaden readership.

● Desire to collaborate with newsroom teams and work in a fast-changing news environment.

Requirements:

● This position is full-time.

● Weekend and evening work may at times be required.

● The successful candidate must be based in the Bay Area or willing to move to the region when it’s mutually agreed that it’s safe enough to do so.
